Jupiter welcomes the new police chief, a veteran of 28 years

There’s a new police chief in town.

The Jupiter Police Department (JPD) is expected to welcome a new chief, Deputy Chief Michael Barbera, who has been named the next police chief and will officially assume command on October 30.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the men and women of the Jupiter Police Department,” Barbera said. “Jupiter is a special place, and the Jupiter Police Department is one of the finest law enforcement agencies in our state and across the country. I look forward to contributing to the legacy of this institution as the next police chief.”

Barbera is a 28-year veteran of the JPD, having joined the force in 1996 as a police officer. Throughout his career, Deputy Chief Barbera has held various roles including:

  • Patrolman
  • Field Training Officer
  • Member of the hostage negotiation team
  • Honor Guard

In addition, Barbera served as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Division for six years and worked in the Street Crimes Unit for two years. He is also a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy, the FBI’s Florida Executive Development Seminar and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Leadership Academy.
