Ship readiness report for zero-carbon fuels

Ship readiness report for zero-carbon fuels

This report focuses on the final stage of the fuel supply chain – the ship – and provides an indication that no (or almost no) carbon fuel is consumed on board ships.

The technology readiness level (TRL) of all potential zero-carbon fuels in our assessment has increased significantly over the past year, with an increase in commercial trials and applications. In addition, the willingness to invest in these fuels in the “ship” supply chain is increasing.

However, at the ship stage, IRL are still affected by uncertainties earlier in the supply chain regarding future fuel availability and supply infrastructure. Significant challenges also remain with regard to the Community Readiness Level (CRL), as the safety risks, particularly for ammonia, hydrogen and methanol, have not yet been fully mitigated.

This report will provide a comprehensive overview of the readiness status of ships in the fuel supply chain and help stakeholders develop solutions to close the operating cost gap through funding and policy changes.
