Sint Maarten: Two people die in a motorcycle accident

Several tragic incidents occurred in Sint Maarten over the weekend, prompting Attorney General Lyndon CJ Lewis to address public safety concerns.

The incidents include the death of Michael Brown, VROMI’s recently appointed director of permits, and his partner, who lost their lives in a motorcycle accident on A. Th. Illidge Rd. Minister Lewis said the police traffic unit was carrying out a full investigation into the cause of the accident.

In another incident on Sucker Garden Road, a police vehicle was involved in an accident while attempting to avoid a fallen scooter rider who had slipped on an oil spill. Both the driver and the police officer suffered minor injuries and were treated by emergency services.

Meanwhile, Minister Lewis says police are investigating a disturbing armed robbery at a jewelry store on Front Street on Saturday afternoon, in which four masked individuals destroyed property and stole valuable items. Working closely with their French counterparts, police have arrested a suspect and investigations are underway to locate the remaining perpetrators and bring them to justice.

And in an unrelated incident, the Attorney General expressed his sadness at the loss of a young woman who took her own life. He says this tragedy reminds the public of the urgent need to support mental health initiatives in Sint Maarten.

Minister Lewis notes that Sint Maarten is at a critical juncture where public safety, mental health and road safety must be a priority. He calls on all citizens to remain vigilant, offer support to those in need and cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation into these incidents continues.
