We’ve written before at HuffPost UK about where shows like Call The Midwife find newborns to star in their scenes.

But what about older child actors who are sometimes insulted by actors on screen?

Are they really just filming these cursing clips as they are, exposing the child to language that is definitely not appropriate for school?

Well, according to Marina Hyde and Richard Osman from The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, it’s (thankfully) not always that easy.

So how is it done?

“There are two schools of thought on this,” said journalist Marina Hyde.

“One of them is: Kids can take it, right? They can take it and they can hear those words and it might not be – you know, they might have heard something at home and it doesn’t matter and it’s all part of the job.”

But there are “levels,” Marina added.

“If you talk to the people at Breeders, they do a clear dialogue recording with the child in question and then when they shoot the actor’s coverage, that’s the part where you’re pretty close and you’re shooting the whole scene and actually are all in there, but the camera is just turned on [the actor]“They will curse.

In the US the rules are different, Marina adds, but in the UK we are “pretty confident” about this “to a certain extent”.

Richard Osman shared his rules about swearing towards children

The “Thursday Murder Club” author said he is always aware that the podcast he co-hosts can be played in a car with children, so he is careful not to be too “forceful” with his language become.

At home, however, he says he tells his own children, “Adults can curse in front of adults and children can curse in front of other children, but you can never cross the streams.”

Marina also shared her wisdom.

When her children ask her why she can swear and she can’t, she replies: “It’s the equivalent of the Ferrari you can’t get at 18.”

“I’ll build you a Ferrari of swearing that you can take out of the garage when you’re 18… By the way, they won’t buy it.”
