Who is Ariyon Bakare, star of gay drama Mr. Loverman?

The creator and star of the new BBC drama Mr. Loverman have defended the show’s casting following controversy over the practice of casting straight actors in gay roles.

Mr. Loverman set in London and explores sexuality and race in Britain’s Caribbean community.

Based on the Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name by Bernadine Evaristo, it follows 74-year-old Barrington “Barry” Jedidiah Walker (Lennie James), who has an affair with his best friend Morris De La Roux (Ariyon Bakare). ), although he was married to his wife Carmel Walker (Sharon D Clarke).

Evaristo recently told Radio Times that she believes “the roles should be given to the best actor for the role.”

“From my position as the author of the book, I want it to go to the person who can play the role, and it doesn’t matter whether they are gay or not,” she said.

In the same interview, Lennie James said he was hesitant about whether he was right for the role of Barry because he wasn’t gay himself, but believed he did his best to do the role justice.

He also rejected the idea that there should be “blanket bans” on straight actors playing LGBTQ+ roles.

Where is Ariyon Bakare from?

Bakare was born and raised in east London to a Nigerian father. Due to a conflict with his father, he left his family home at the age of 15 and completed his education while being homeless for a year. He has since spoken about his experiences in interviews, including with anti-homeless publication The Big Issue.

Bakare told The Big Issue: “That was my place of complete invisibility. This was the place where I saw people just walking past me. Even my own father did it. One day he walked past me. I watched him just walk by. And it puts you in an emotional state that has never really left me.”

At the age of 17, he moved to New York to pursue a career as a dancer. However, he later decided to concentrate on acting and moved back to London at the age of 20 to study acting at the Drama Center London.

“I called people I know and asked myself: Are you a racist? Some people said, “It has nothing to do with me,” or “It’s for those who live in America.” One person said, “I don’t see your color.” That blew me away. I said, ‘If you don’t see my color, then you don’t see the struggles I’ve been through’.”

Bakare said he created iCARE — which stands for Conversations About Racial Equality — to “create a space for people to talk about racial equality.”
