Taiwan discovers Chinese aircraft carrier, Chinese military video says ‘prepared for battle’

TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwan reported on Sunday that a Chinese aircraft carrier group sailed to the south of the island, while the Chinese military released a video saying it was “prepared for combat” amid concerns in Taipei about the possibility a new round of Chinese war games prevailed. China, which considers democratically ruled Taiwan its own territory, detests its President Lai Ching-te as a “separatist” and the Chinese military regularly operates around the island. Last week, in his National Day keynote speech, Lai said the People’s Republic of China had no right to represent Taiwan but that the island was willing to work with Beijing to combat challenges such as climate change, striking both a firm and conciliatory but drawing tone of anger from China.
