Sleeping in reduces the risk of a heart attack

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Hopefully you were able to rest over the weekend.

We learned that sleeping a little longer on the weekend can be good for your heart, especially if you’re sleep-deprived during the week.

This is new research from European Society of Cardiology.

It shows that getting more sleep on your days off can reduce your risk of heart disease by up to 20%.

The study found that the benefits of sleeping in were even stronger among people who typically got less than 7 hours of sleep during the week.

Experts recommend making good sleep a priority because chronic lack of sleep can harm your heart. Doctors say it increases stress hormones and blood pressure.

Sleep during the week is also important.

While sleeping longer on the weekend can help you catch up on rest, experts recommend that you focus on getting good sleep throughout the week.

Maintain consistent sleep habits that allow for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.
