Man wanted for murder in Maryland leads Philadelphia police on chase – NBC10 Philadelphia

Police officers trying to stop a pickup truck for a traffic violation were instead led on a chase through North Philadelphia by a murder suspect wanted in Maryland late Sunday, officials said.

According to Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace, the incident began at approximately 11:14 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2024, after officers spotted markings on a blue pickup truck they saw on the 4000 block of I Street in the Juniata Park neighborhood of Philadelphia stopped, checked for traffic violations.

After Pace examined the truck’s license plate, which had a Maryland license plate, they learned that the truck was being sought in connection with a murder in that state that had occurred just the day before.

Before officers could approach the vehicle, Pace said, the driver drove away and police gave chase “as the vehicle was wanted in connection with a homicide.”

During the course of the chase, the truck eventually collided along the 4000 block of Castor Avenue, where it crashed into two vehicles parked illegally in the center median before continuing to crash into vehicles parked on both sides of the street, according to Pace.

Pace said there were two people in the pickup and both were taken to area hospitals.

Pace said the driver suffered leg and back injuries and the passenger was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Further investigation revealed that the blue pickup truck that was totaled in the accident allegedly belonged to a victim who was murdered in Queens County, Maryland.

Pace said the driver of the truck is being held as a suspect in the murder and that police will extradite him back to Maryland to face charges.

Pace said the person is also expected to be charged in that incident in Philadelphia.

Additionally, Pace said investigators did not recover any weapons from the vehicle.

The police initially did not provide any further information about the people involved in this incident. But, Pace said, an investigation is underway.

This is breaking news. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
