Apalachee High School students return to class full time following the school shooting

WINDER, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Students at Apalachee High School will be back in class full time following the Sept. 4 mass shooting that left two teachers and two students dead.

Since the end of last month, students have been attending school half-time to make it easier for them to return to school.

The hall where the shooting took place remains closed. For this reason, the students are taken by bus to another location for social studies.

The first full day brings some changes. Since that mass shooting occurred just over a month ago, some parents and students have been calling for more security measures. District leaders say this is actively happening.

The Barrow County School District is looking for ways to improve safety in all of its schools. In fact, at a Board of Education meeting earlier this month, they approved hiring eight more resource officers for the district. They also voted to introduce classroom phones, allowing teachers to quickly and discreetly alert administrators to concerns. These phones will initially be installed in secondary schools.

According to its website, the district is looking at possible improvements such as metal or weapon detectors and clear backpacks. The district also says it will meet with school management teams through November to present additional safety recommendations to the board early next year.
