Justin Rackley faces new charges, including assault, in the Sioux Falls triple murder case

The suspect at the center of Sioux Falls’ only triple murder in the last 50 years has had several new charges added to his name after a Lincoln County grand jury handed up indictments in the case earlier this week.

Justin Cody Rackley, 30, was charged Tuesday with the first three counts of first-degree murder, and now adds four more counts of aggravated assault, according to Lincoln County court records. Those assault charges include two counts of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Rackley is currently being held in the Minnehaha County Jail on a $3 million bond. The documents also say he is linked to an open robbery charge out of Texas.

The indictment does not reveal many other details about what happened on June 8, the morning of the murders. However, the names of two other victims of the incident are listed in connection with the latest charges, and it is alleged that Rackley attempted to intentionally cause bodily harm to those victims.

Both victims testified before the grand jury, court records show, but the Argus Leader is not releasing their names at this time for privacy and privacy reasons.

The murder victims include Daniel Carl Kemnitz, 43, Kellie E. Reaves, 43, and Michael A. Thompson, 34, all of Sioux Falls.

The triple murder occurred in the early morning hours of June 8th. Officers responded to a home in the area of ​​South Drexel Drive and West 58th Street around 2:45 a.m. due to disturbances occurring within the Sioux Falls city limits and on the Lincoln County line, a news release from the Department said at the time Sioux Falls Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found three adults dead from apparent gunshot wounds and two additional victims with non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to an area hospital for treatment, the statement said.

Lt. Aaron Nyberg estimated that at least a dozen people were in the house the night before and early that morning and were gathered around a campfire or fire pit at the time. Some left as the chaos spread, but not all, Nyberg explained during a June 10 news conference. Children were also at the home but were sleeping at the time and were not involved, he said.

Rackley pleaded not guilty to all three murder charges during his first court appearance June 10 in Lincoln County, according to the South Dakota Unified Judicial System’s online court records database.

All three people killed in the incident have now been buried, with the last service taking place on Tuesday.

The last time there was a homicide with three or more victims in Sioux Falls was in 1973, when a family was found dead in their home, Nyberg said. There were four victims and the suspect took his own life, he said.
