Chicago Police Fire Shots in Old Town Neighborhood; COPA is investigating

CHICAGO (CBS) – An investigation was underway after Chicago police officers fired shots in the Uptown neighborhood Sunday evening.

The scene occurred shortly after 7 p.m. in the 300 block of West Division Street, an area known for its restaurants and bars. On Sunday night it was swamped by a massive police presence.

Division Street between Wells and Orleans was closed for hours.

As of 10 p.m., Chicago police had not released details about what led officers to fire shots, but the Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed it was investigating an “officer-involved shooting.”

Shortly after several shots were fired, a silver sedan was seen believed to be involved in the shooting.

The vehicle – which witnesses said was riddled with bullet holes – was discovered just a half-mile away in an alley off LaSalle Street.

A neighbor described how quickly everything unraveled and he jumped out of bed in a panic.

“The next thing I knew, I heard six shots ring out. We both jumped back. That scared us and then a car – a silver car – came speeding out there and then just drove down the Wells.” [Street]and I couldn’t see where it went after that, but it sped up and dodged traffic. “It was wild,” James Grillo said. “Then, maybe 30 seconds later, a few cars started chasing them.”

It was unclear if anyone was injured in the incident or if anyone was in custody late Sunday night.
