Spence Whitman Headlines Sold-Out Comedy Show ‘Problem Solved’ –

On Friday evening there was expectant chatter and the smell of popcorn University Theater as groups of friends, family and community members gathered for the debut of Spence Whitmanis the comedy show, “Problem solved.” After months of preparation, the time had finally come.

The set presented a 10 minute opening of Sophie Taylor, Fellow UNC students, followed by a 50-minute appearance by Whitman. During their performance, both shared anecdotes from their lives, portrayed characters and interacted with the audience during their time on stage.

Although both artists had experience in front of a live audience, this was their first time organize their own show. Most of her previous performances had taken place with False winningsa comedy group at UNC.

Much of the material was new to the audience. Some had previously seen Whitman and Taylor perform with False Profits and was there to support the pair and see them perform again. Some volunteered to help with the show by handing out tickets.

New viewers expressed their excitement at Whitman’s appearance. Kaya Smith Burgessa junior media and journalism student, said She discovered the show via Instagram.

“He’s funny on Instagram and he’s funny on TikTok, so I wanted to see what he would be like on stage,” Smith-Burgess said said.

Whitman said He had a sentence with a general overview and prepared incorporated Improvisation based on the audience’s energy for a captivating performance. He wanted We wanted the performance to be fun and strived to make the experience as stress-free as possible by preparing and checking everything before the big night.

“I felt good before the show,” Whitman said said. “I put a lot of faith in myself to prepare properly and I trusted that I would do it. And so today I just knew I wanted to do my best, and coming out of it I knew I talked to people, so I feel really good.”

Taylor and Whitman too practiced some improvisation and dancing to relax before we hit the stage. Taylor said that performing a rehearsed set in front of an audience was exciting compared to the spontaneity of improvisation.
