Tragic suicide of a police officer in Hyderabad sparks allegations of police harassment in Ganja case | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: A policeman out of Bhadradri Kothagudem who tried it suicide on Saturday evening, supposedly following harassment condemned by his superiors, died on Sunday while undergoing treatment at a corporate hospital in Hyderabad. After his condition began to deteriorate, he was transferred to the city for better treatment. He was previously arrested in one Ganja case and later suspended.
In a series of videos recorded by 35-year-old Bhukya Sagar before taking the extreme step near his home in Khammam, he claimed that his senior officers, sub-inspectors Rajesh Kumar and Santosh Kumar, gave him a ganja case charged. He named a third person, Gonela Nani, who is associated with a political party. “I am not in a position to take on this guilt. They were involved in the ganja trade. They used my cell phone to call consumers and suppliers. If there is a mistake, the SI should be questioned, but I have been made a scapegoat,” Sagar said in a video that was widely shared on social media. In one of Sagar’s videos, he can also be seen asking his wife Ashwini to take care of their children and his father to forgive him.
On a complaint from Sagar’s father Bhukya Kishan, a case of abetment to suicide (109 BNS) and prevention of atrocities against SC&STs was registered against Kothagudem’s former task force inspector Satyanarayana, sub-inspectors Santosh and Raj Kumar of Burgampahad police station Sagar worked for time of his arrest and another private citizen, Gonela Nani, said Ufatul Rafi, Station House Officer, Enkoor Police Station, Khammam.
Kothagudem police confirmed that Sagar, a 2013 batch police officer, was initially posted at Burgampahad police station. A ministry investigation into some of the seized ganja that went missing from the police station in January 2024 revealed Sagar’s role in it.
“The investigation revealed that Sagar was involved in the theft of seized ganja. Subsequently, he was also charged under the NDPS Act and sent to judicial custody. He was released on bail in March 2024 and subsequently suspended,” said a Kothagudem official. Sagar’s suspension was lifted a few days ago and he was given a new posting at Edulla Bayyaram police station. However, he did not report for duty.
