The BBC has released the first look images from The Split: Barcelona – the much-anticipated return of the Defoes. And good news for fans, it’s coming soon.

The two-part special of the hit legal drama – created and written by multi-award winning Abi Morgan – will arrive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year.

How can I watch The Split: Barcelona?

The Barcelona-based split spin-off is coming soon to BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The film was shot in Spain earlier this year. In fact, principal photography wrapped in May.

Despite fears that the series is finally over, the series will return after the heartbreaking Season 3 finale…albeit as a short Season 4 with just two episodes.

Although the BBC hasn’t confirmed the launch date yet, we’re confident it’s coming soon. Why else should we bother with these new pictures from the set?

All previous series (there are three of them) are currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

What we know so far about Season 4 of The Split

New photos from The Split: Barcelona – aka Series 4 – introduce actor Toby Stephens as “suitable” family lawyer Archie Moore. Archie could very well be a new love interest for Hannah – or, to be fair, one of her sisters.

However, if you are one of the fans of the series hoping for a Hannah and Nathan reunion, there may be hope.

A new photo from the set of season four shows Nicola Walker’s character Hannah affectionately stroking Nathan’s cheek.

Fans will know that Season 3 ended with Hannah and Nathan agreeing to part ways for good – sob! – after 20 years together. They agree to find their way through a “good divorce.” The new two-parter catches up with them two years later.

We know that The Split’s special two-parter is set in Barcelona, Spain. The BBC told us: “The hit legal drama The Split will return to BBC iPlayer and BBC One later this year in a Spanish extravaganza set over a sunny weekend.”

The episodes will “explore the themes of love”

The statement continued: “The episodes will explore themes of love, legacy and modern marriage through a sparkling cast of characters that audiences know and love.”

“The breakup will include breakups, reunions and like all good weddings, lots of romance. Can Hannah banish the ghosts of her past and open herself to the possibility of love again in the Spanish countryside? Can she find the courage to take the leap into a new future?”

Where does The Split: Barcelona play? Where was it filmed?

As the title suggests, the fourth season of The Split was filmed and set in Barcelona.

The new images show the popular Defoe family swapping briefcases for suitcases and traveling to Barcelona to get married in the sun-drenched vineyards of Catalonia.

We’re told: “Two years after the third and final season, formidable family lawyer Hannah Defoe and her family are back, gathered for a beautiful wedding on a magnificent vineyard in the heart of Catalonia’s wine region.”

Who wrote The Split: Barcelona?

Abi Morgan created The Split and wrote all subsequent series of the series. She is also known for the Netflix series Eric, the brilliant detective drama River and the equally fantastic The Hour. Basically, we are in good hands here.

She says of the new series: “In a world of brutal break-ups and alluring make-ups, the Defoe family are invited to their own wedding abroad, promising everything audiences love about The Split.”

“Problematic marriages, scandalous wedding crashers and low-flying marriage proposals as romantic comedy meetings go awry in a chaotic and rollicking weekend that’s guaranteed to rip your heart out before the last guests have gone home.”

How many episodes are in The Split Season 4?
