Man charged with stabbing and shooting in area

A second man has been charged following a violent confrontation with police in Wagga Wagga, following a knife attack and shooting in the New South Wales town of Riverina last week.

Officers were called to a Wagga Wagga park about 12.30pm on Thursday after reports of a shooting and were told that a 42-year-old man had been stabbed with scissors by a 33-year-old man before being shot by a third man , who fled.

The 33-year-old was arrested early on Friday after police held him for 12 hours from an island in the nearby Murrumbidgee River.

He was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and remains in court, police said.

Late on Sunday police charged a 35-year-old man in connection with the park incident after confronting him at a Wagga Wagga hotel on Saturday.

“The man allegedly refused to leave the room and a police operation ensued involving local police with the support of specialist police officers, including the Tactical Operations Unit, and police negotiators,” a police statement said.

“At approximately 10 p.m., police entered the room and used a Taser to arrest a 35-year-old man after he allegedly produced a knife.”

The man was later charged with homicide, firearms offenses and breach of bail.

He is due to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on Monday.
