Live Updates: Attack on Binyamina, Israel from Lebanon Leaves 60 Injured, Hezbollah Claims Responsibility

UN peacekeepers in Lebanon said on Sunday that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had breached one of their positions in southern Lebanon, violating international law.

“At around 4:30 a.m., while the peacekeepers were in shelters, two IDF Merkava tanks destroyed the main gate of the position and forcibly entered the position. They repeatedly demanded that the base turn off its lights,” the U.N. interim force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, said in a statement on Sunday.

“The tanks left about 45 minutes later after UNIFIL protested through our liaison mechanism, saying that the presence of the IDF was putting the peacekeepers in danger.”

UNIFIL said the IDF’s actions were a “flagrant violation of international law and Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006),” adding that it had demanded an explanation from the Israeli military on what it described as “shocking” violations.

In addition to the violation of their position, UNIFIL also said that 15 of its soldiers were being treated following another incident in the same area.

“At approximately 6:40 a.m., peacekeepers at the same location reported that several shots had been fired 100 meters to the north, emitting smoke. Despite wearing protective masks, fifteen peacekeepers suffered effects including skin irritation and gastrointestinal reactions after the smoke entered the camp,” the statement said, without specifying who fired the shots.

Finally, UNIFIL said the IDF stopped an alleged “critical logistical movement” near Meiss el Jabal and denied it passage.
