Organizations discuss Ky. Constitutional Amendment 2 before the election

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – This is something that has caused some controversy leading up to Election Day.

On the ballot you’ll see Kentucky Amendment 2, which asks people to vote “yes” or “no” if they support allowing the General Assembly to provide financial aid to students outside of the public education system.

“This is about public dollars being intended for public schools and our system should not be further damaged by defunding public schools,” said Luisa Sanchez, a member of the Kentucky Student Voice Team (KSVT).

Students from the Kentucky Student Voice Team voice their concerns during a bus tour of central Kentucky.

“We are not opponents of private schools. We believe that whatever education a student chooses is the right education, but we believe that one private or public system should not be chosen over another system,” said Will Powers, an adult partner at KSVT.

These are arguments that Amendment 2 advocates like David Walls of the Family Foundation call misunderstandings.

“The other side will say, ‘Public money is for public schools,’ and my answer to that is no, public money is for the common good, and the common good is ensuring that every student in our commonwealth gets the best.” ” If education is possible, and that is actually what Amendment 2 is about, it would open the doors for serious debate or discussion in the next General Assembly,” Walls said.

If a majority of Kentuckians vote “yes,” things wouldn’t automatically change for the public school sector, but it could open the door for lawmakers who support it to suggest what other systems those funds should be allocated to.
