A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in a crash in Caldwell County

HUDSON, NC (WBTV) – A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in a crash Saturday afternoon in Caldwell County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said it happened on Hickory Nut Ridge Road near Baton Church Road around 3:10 p.m

A golf cart attempted to turn left from a private driveway and entered the path of an eastbound 2018 Chevrolet Malibu.

The driver of the golf cart, Roy Shane Epps, 58, of Granite Falls, was taken to a hospital in Winston-Salem, where he died. His wife, who was riding in the golf cart, was taken to a Charlotte hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Malibu, Cody Lyndon Pennell, 33, of Morganton, was not injured.

Initial research suggests impairment is a factor. Pennell was arrested and charged with driving while impaired. Further charges are pending following the completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office.

The roadway in the area was closed for approximately one hour while the investigation took place at the scene.
