Spain releases statement on Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal after injury scare against Denmark

Barcelona attacker Lamine Yamal will be released from the Spanish camp ahead of La Roja’s UEFA Nations League clash against Serbia.

17-year-old Yamal was seen limping behind Spain 1-0 win against Denmark, and there were fears the attacker could be sidelined for a while due to injury.

However, head coach of La Roja Luis de la Fuente suggested that the striker had been treated roughly by the Danish players, with the striker suffering from a blow rather than a possible muscle problem.

“You have to apply the rigor that the rules allow,” De la Fuente told reporters. “There is a referee who marks the limit. Against young players with his talent, [opponents] Try to intimidate and seek contact.

“The referee has to protect these talented players, but Lamine has to get used to it. I would love it if it was a piece of cake, flower power, but this sport is like that. Lamine showed an exceptional attitude and generated a lot for us from the right flank.

Spain confirms Yamal’s withdrawal from the squad

Spain have now confirmed that Yamal was spared a “structural injury” against Denmark but will not be at risk for his country’s next Nations League game against Serbia.

“‘Lamine Yamal underwent an MRI this morning in Madrid to assess the complaints reported after the game against Denmark,” said a statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

“The tests did not reveal any structural injuries and the RFEF medical services confirmed that it was an overload. In order to prioritize the player’s health and avoid any risk of injury given the upcoming game against Serbia, it was decided to remove him from the squad.”

Yamal made his debut for Spain in September 2023 and played 17 times for his national team, scoring three goals and providing nine assists.

Will Yamal miss football for Barcelona?

The youngster was in outstanding form for Barcelona in the 2024-25 season, scoring five goals and providing five assists in 11 appearances across all competitions.

Yamal has scored four goals and provided five assists in nine La Liga games this season, while he has scored once in two Champions League games.

Barcelona will face Sevilla again in La Liga next weekend and Yamal is expected to start, with that game coming ahead of games against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the Champions League and La Liga respectively.

The Catalan club had hoped that Yamal would be released from international duty to prevent minor issues from developing into a long-term problem and he will now return to his club to prepare for the clash with Sevilla.
