Is a Doctor Who spin-off planned? Find out as showrunner Russell T Davies shares a big update

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies has shared details about the upcoming spin-off and the special Christmas episode that fans have been eagerly awaiting.

Davies reportedly mentioned that audiences will be reintroduced to the Sea Devils in the miniseries The War Between Land and Sea. The Sea Devils most recently appeared in the classic series Doctor Who and the Sea Devils, where they faced off against Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

The cast of the spin-off series includes Jemma Redgrave, Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alexander Devrient and Ruth Madeley alongside Vincent Franklin, popularly known for his role in Gentleman Jack. The makers will announce more cast members soon.

The official synopsis for the upcoming series outlines the plot: “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean and dramatically reveals itself to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT springs into action as the country and… “Sea Wage War.”

Speaking to the entertainment portal, the creator of Doctor Who revealed that the cast and crew have arrived in the third week of filming and are looking forward to showing fans what they have created.

He further shared, “Typically five episodes are divided into two or three blocks, shot roughly in order… But this is all one big block, so an actor might appear for the first time in the very last scene of the episode.” episode (and someone actually does), but we might need them to film tomorrow.

Additionally, Davies wants to complete the entire series by the end of the year, possibly around Christmas. Additionally, Ncuti Gatwa will return as the fifteenth Doctor in the Christmas special episode alongside Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan.

Filming is expected to complete by the end of the year and the second season of Doctor Who will be available to stream on Disney+ by 2025. Fans can expect the miniseries to release in late 2025 or mid-2026.
