Biden is reportedly postponing his visit to Germany until October 18th

US President Joe Biden is expected to visit Germany on October 18, postponing his trip originally planned for October 12 but postponed due to Hurricane Milton. Reuters and Der Spiegel reported the new date, citing German government sources.

This visit comes at a crucial time in Ukraine’s ongoing war, as Western allies grapple with sustained support for Kiev’s defense efforts. The talks in Germany are expected to focus on coordinating military aid, addressing Ukraine’s urgent needs for air defense systems and long-range weapons, and coordinating strategies to combat Russian aggression.

Although not a formal state visit, the visit will focus on ongoing joint work between the two countries. Biden is expected to meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The talks are expected to focus on Russia’s war against Ukraine and the Middle East conflict.

The earlier postponement led to the cancellation of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (Ramstein format) meeting, at which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was supposed to present a “victory plan” to partners. At this meeting, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte indicated plans to discuss the use of long-range weapons against military targets in Russia. A new date for the Ramstein meeting will be announced later.

This trip marks the first visit by a US president to Germany in 40 years.

He was due to arrive in Germany on October 12 to chair the Ramstein meeting on aid to Ukraine, and Zelensky was also expected. However, Biden postponed the visit due to a hurricane in the USA.
