U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concern in a phone call Saturday evening with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant about reports that Israeli forces had fired on U.N. peacekeeping positions in Lebanon, the Pentagon said.

Additionally, during the call, Austin expressed concern over the reported deaths of two Lebanese soldiers and also called on Israel to refrain from military operations in Lebanon, the Pentagon added.

In the call, Austin apparently raised the humanitarian situation in Gaza and “emphasized the need to take steps to address it,” the Pentagon said, while emphasizing Austin’s “unwavering, enduring and ironclad U.S. commitment to security.” Israel” affirmed.

According to the Pentagon, during the call Austin recalled the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur and expressed the need to return the hostages held in Hamas captivity.
