  • Black bear hunting season begins Monday in New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey’s black bear hunting season begins Monday, October 14, with new regulations and safety measures. The hunt is divided into two sections, with Section A taking place from October 14th to 19th and Section B from December 9th to 14th. The first three days of Section A are archery-only, while muzzleloaders are permitted starting October 17.

Under state regulations, hunters are limited to one bear per segment and cannot harvest bears that weigh less than 75 pounds alive or clothed. The New Jersey Fish and Game Council recently updated the state’s black bear management policy and officially adopted the changes on October 2.

The 2024 season also includes a possible extension for Segment B if the harvest rate does not reach 20% by the end of the regular segment. If the season is extended, the hunt will continue from December 18th to 21st.

Hunters are reminded of restrictions, including a ban on bear hunting near bait areas and a requirement to check harvested bears at designated stations throughout the state. The season could end early if the total harvest reaches 30% of tagged bears.

For more information on regulations and permit details, hunters can visit the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife website.
