A drama released by China’s spy agency suggests that foreign spies are targeting scientists

China’s leading spy agency has released a TV drama that suggests foreign spies are trying to kill scientists, and whose plot may be inspired by a real-life case.

China’s Ministry of State Security did not say the TV series was based on a true story, but it could provide clues about how the ministry investigates suspicious deaths.

The TV series, The dark tide rageswas posted by the ministry on its official WeChat account last Tuesday and shows a scientist researching aerospace materials being targeted by foreign spies who sabotage his car.

The plot may be a reference to the accident that killed Colonel Feng Yanghe, one of the masterminds behind the artificial intelligence software used in China’s military simulations

According to media reports, Feng was traveling in a rideshare car after leaving an airport in Beijing when the accident occurred last July.

Authorities have not released much information about the accident, but the National University of Defense Technology, where Feng worked, said he “sacrificed his life while carrying out an important mission.”

In the drama, the scientist was working on the technology used in “the engines and turbine systems of new generation fighter jets” before the accident that sabotaged a rental car he was driving to the airport.
