Indian politician Baba Siddique was shot dead in Mumbai on Saturday.

The 66-year-old lawmaker was a former minister in the western state of Maharashtra and was known for his lavish parties.

According to local media, Siddique was shot multiple times in the chest outside his son’s office.

It comes weeks before state elections scheduled for November.

Investigations are ongoing

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who belongs to the same party as Siddique, said he was “shocked” at the “cowardly attack”.

“The incident is being investigated thoroughly and strict action will be taken against the attackers,” Pawar said in a statement.

“The mastermind of the attack is also being investigated.”

The Hindustan Times The newspaper reported that two suspects had been arrested and police were searching for a third. Broadcaster NDTV said the suspects claimed they were part of a gang led by Lawrence Bishnoi, who is in prison on charges of leading a criminal gang that committed several murders.
