Clayton County mother asks for new information, arrests made in shooting of her son

The mother of a 19-year-old shot to death in Clayton County two years ago is demanding long-overdue answers.

Kameron Jones was shot and killed at the Riverwood Townhouses in October 2022.

Clayton County police have not made any arrests.

“I’m standing up for my son,” said Karena Matthews, Kameron Jones’ mother.

She celebrated the sombre anniversary on Saturday with family, friends and community activists.

Kameron’s friend, 16-year-old Robert Shaw, was also shot.

Matthews described Kameron as quiet and artistic.

“He was shy. He loved art, be it music or drawing. He loved to draw,” Matthews said.

Meanwhile, she was hoping to get at least some semblance of justice for her son’s murder.

“I am devastated by the results of how the Clayton County Police Department is handling this,” Matthews said.

FOX 5 Atlanta reporter Eric Mock contacted the CCPD about the investigation. They told him there was no update on the investigation and that no one was available to answer questions over the weekend.

Matthews said it had been too long since she received an update from investigators.

“It’s been a whole year since our interview [with] the boss. So we need updates,” she said.

On Saturday, she handed out fliers to neighbors at townhouses with information about a $2,000 reward for information.

“I just hope someone comes forward and says something, something they remember from that time. If he has any evidence of this, he or his child could be next,” Matthews said.

Clayton County community activist Meia Ballinger came out in support of Matthews on Saturday and urged people to come forward.

“It’s time for residents to come together and talk to each other. Stop being afraid of being a so-called ‘snitch’ and come out because that could be your child next time,” Ballinger said.

The family asks anyone with information to contact Clayton County Police Detective Jason Gant at 770-477-3604. You can also report through Crimestoppers by texting “CLAYTONPD” and your tip to 274637 (CRIMES).
