One dead, several injured in shooting near Tennessee State University

One person is dead and at least nine others were injured after gunfire erupted near Tennessee State University in Nashville.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at one of the school’s homecoming events.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the bullets were fired near the intersection of Jefferson and 27th Streets shortly after 5 p.m.

A statement posted on X.com shortly after 6:30 p.m. said: “The crime scene is secure.” “All victims are in area hospitals.”

Police later identified the deceased as a 24-year-old man. They also noted that three of the victims were juveniles whose injuries were “non-critical.”

“At least one of the injured people is suspected of being involved in the shooting.”

Police confirmed to Fox that several people had been shot. According to witnesses, more than half a dozen shots rang out before they dropped to the ground for cover.

Some bystanders said they saw the victims being carried out on stretchers.

At 5:30 p.m., the university alerted students that there was an active shooter off campus. TSU said the suspects were two black men and that they were possibly driving a Ford Fusion.

Rauf Muhammad, 58, was less than 50 meters from the incident when he heard the shots.

“Everyone’s having fun, playing music or whatever.” “Then all of a sudden you hear like you’re at war somewhere,” Muhammad told the Tennessean.

After hearing the sudden shots, he fell to the ground. Muhammad said authorities were at the scene within five minutes.

Jashawna Rucker, a recent high school senior, was also on Jefferson Street where the shooting occurred.

Rucker said: I was so close. I thought it was just fireworks. And everyone just ran. And I started running – I almost fell.’

“At this time, there are 10 confirmed victims involved in the shooting, one of whom is deceased,” Reese said.

“Five of them were transported to local hospitals by the Nashville Fire Department.

“Five others were dropped off by private vehicles and at least some of the injured in area hospitals are also suspected of being involved in the shooting.”

Kendra Loney of the Nashville Fire Department said first responders were stationed throughout the area when the shooting erupted because they were participating in the school’s homecoming parade.

Even if the emergency services did not have their equipment with them, they still took action.

Loney said some heroic officers “ripped off their belts” to use as tourniquets.

“We do not know what the final casualty toll will be, but at this point we are grateful that it is not higher.”

“We are also grateful that first responders, law enforcement, and fire and rescue personnel were on scene.”
