Here’s who’s running for Tarrant County Criminal District Court No. 3 judge on Nov. 5

Republican Douglas Allen and Democrat John Brender are facing off in the November race for judge of Tarrant County Criminal District Court No. 3. The court is one of eleven district criminal courts that handle adult crime cases in the county.

Allen was appointed as a judge in Criminal District Court No. 3 by Governor Greg Abbott in January 2023. He previously served as an assistant district attorney in Tarrant County and as an assistant U.S. attorney. According to his website, his priority is “to create a fair, efficient and professional judicial environment in which justice is the cornerstone for all parties involved.” His campaign did not respond to messages seeking responses to the Star-Telegram’s candidate questionnaire.

Brender served as an assistant district attorney in Dallas County for more than six years. He practices law in Fort Worth and has worked as both a prosecutor and defense attorney. According to his website, his priority is “We want to rid our Tarrant County streets of violent criminals and drug dealers while taking the time to address the mental health and safety of our children in our community.” His campaign did not respond to messages seeking responses to the Star-Telegram’s candidate questionnaire.
