A Jewish school was shot at in Canada on Yom Kippur

Bullets were fired at a Jewish day school in Toronto on Friday evening, during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, Toronto police reported Saturday.

This was the second time that girls’ school Bais Chaya Mushka Elementary School was targeted this year. In May, the school was attacked by two men who fired five shots into the building.

“We understand the fear and pain this causes, particularly on Yom Kippur,” Toronto police said Saturday, adding they stand in solidarity with the Jewish community.

The school was empty at the time of the incident, which occurred at around 4:05 a.m. local time. Although no one was injured, the building was damaged.

Insp Paul Krawczyk reported: “Upon further investigation it was determined that shots had been fired.”

While Krawczyk said police have not determined whether it was a hate crime, he added that the timing of it being committed on a Jewish holiday suggests the matter itself is worthy of investigation.

“It’s Yom Kippur and a Jewish school has been shot up. That’s why the hate crimes unit is an important part of this investigation,” Krawczyk said.

Canadian leaders condemn attack

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called it a “horrible anti-Semitic act that destroys the peace of the High Holidays and Yom Kippur.”

“I affirm that Bais Chaya Mushka students have the right to learn and teachers have the right to teach in safety and without fear of anti-Semitic attacks.”

She added that police would increase their presence in the area.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “very disturbed” when he learned of the incident.

“As we wait for further details, I have compassion for the students, staff and parents who must be frightened and hurting today.”

“Anti-Semitism is a vile and dangerous form of hate – and we will not allow it,” he concluded.

Opposition politician Pierre Poilievre condemned what he said was “another shameful and shockingly common anti-Semitic attack in Canada in 2024.”

He pointed to a 251 percent increase in hate crimes during the “nine years of the NDP Liberals” and vowed to ban terrorists if he succeeds in taking over the country’s leadership.

Statistics Canada reported that in 2022, Jewish Canadians were the target of 67% of all religiously motivated hate crimes.
