Logan Man Sentenced to Additional Prison Time for Identity Fraud and Sexual Assault of Sleeping Woman – KVNU

LOGAN – A 45-year-old Logan man will spend an additional six months behind bars on two separate counts of identity fraud and sexually assaulting a woman while she was sleeping. Jose Antonio Torres-Medina will remain in the Cache County Jail until March 2025 after a judge gave him a longer sentence.

Torres-Medina was sentenced Sept. 25 in Logan 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to four counts of identity and communications fraud, all second-degree felonies; and sexual battery, amended to a Class A misdemeanor.

Prosecutors say a woman contacted Logan City police officers in January 2023 and explained how she was sexually assaulted by Torres, with whom she had previously had a relationship. She described taking medication that caused drowsiness and dizziness on the night of November 11, 2022. She stated how she fell asleep but later woke up noticing signs that she had been sexually assaulted.

Officers later interviewed Torres. He said the sex was consensual, although the woman never spoke or did anything during the incident.

As the investigation continued, police found several fake identification documents in Torres’ possession.

Court records show Torres was previously arrested for physically assaulting the same woman. He also violated a protective order she had obtained against him.

During the sentencing hearing, defense attorney Cameron Cox admitted that Torres had used two different Social Security cards for years. He claimed his client did not realize it was a crime.

However, the victim told the court that Torres knew what he was doing was wrong. She explained how he had sexually abused her for years. He would also open credit accounts in her name.

Judge Brian Cannell sided with the victim and ordered Torres, who has been in prison since February 2023, to serve an additional 180 days behind bars. He also ordered no contact with the victim.
