Azerbaijan has no obligation to release war criminals, foreign ministry says

Azerbaijan is not obliged to release war criminals and representatives of the separatist junta regime of Armenian origin, said a statement by Aykhan Hajizada, spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. Azernews
Reports.

Hajizada criticized Armenia’s contradictory stance and pointed out that despite claiming to recognize Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, the Armenian leadership continues to support the separatist regime in the territories of Azerbaijan. “The Prime Minister of Armenia even congratulated the separatist junta on so-called ‘independence’ on September 2, 2023,” he said.

Hajizada addressed Armenia’s statements on the Lachin Corridor and the return of refugees, describing them as “surprising and mocking.” He rejected Armenia’s claims that prisoners of war had not been returned, emphasizing that Azerbaijan had handed over all prisoners of war in accordance with humanitarian principles.

“The Armenian side’s claim that Azerbaijan should release war criminals is absurd,” Hajizada said, reiterating that Azerbaijan is not obliged to release people involved in war crimes or linked to the separatist junta regime.

The statement also called on the Armenian leadership to abandon unfounded territorial claims, falsifications of history and rhetoric that misleads the international community. “We call on Armenia to learn lessons from the dire situation in which it has brought itself through its aggressive policy and to refrain from further inflammatory statements,” concluded Hajizada.
