Dehradun: A 45-year-old woman pilgrim from Birat in Nepal died after falling into a gorge near Cheerbasa on the Kedarnath-Gaurikund route on Friday.
The victim, Jirwa Koirin, was on her way back from Kedarnath when she was hit by a mule on the way and lost her balance. NDRF and SDRF Teams pulled out the body and handed it over to Rudraprayag district police.
Rudraprayag Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said: The pilgrim was hit by a pony and fell into the gorge after losing her balance. She died on the spot. After receiving the information, the SDRF team led by police chief Santosh Rawat reached the spot. The woman had come alone for the pilgrimage.
Rajwar pointed out that the same trekking route was also used by the mules, resulting in the trekking area being a bit crowded.
After the monsoon season, large numbers of pilgrims have started visiting Kedarnath, with most of them taking the trek to the revered shrine. During the current week, an average of over 10,000 pilgrims visited the temple daily.
As of October 11, over 13,000 devotees had visited Kedarnath. This is the maximum number of pilgrims going to a shrine in the Char Dham Yatra.
Notably, nearly 40 lakh devotees undertook the yatra this year.
