A 31-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempting to sexually assault a 70-year-old woman and then sexually assaulting her, authorities said.

Brian Kibiwot Chuchuney pleaded guilty in July to one count of kidnapping and two counts of attempted sexual assault, according to a statement from the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for kidnapping and life probation for each attempted sexual assault.

According to an MCAO release, the victim was working as an overnight receptionist at an apartment building near Jefferson Street in the early morning hours of December 17, 2023, when Chuchuney asked to be let in.

“The victim mistook the defendant for a local resident and let him in, whereupon he asked for some water,” the MCAO release said.

“As she turned from her desk to get water, the defendant followed her and attempted to sexually assault her and then sexually assaulted her.”

Then Chuchuney took the victim’s clothes and left. Officers searched the area and found him several hours later.

In her statement to the court, the victim said: “Your cruelty has hurt me physically and financially, but most of all the emotional blow you have caused has destroyed my life and ability to work and has seriously injured my family.”
