Simi, mother of five children killed in a knife attack, was recalled because she prioritized the children

A 34-year-old Simi Valley woman who died after a fatal stabbing last month dedicated her life to raising her five children, her mother said.

“She made sure her children came first,” said Mary Rachida Crockett, the mother of Jessica Tinoco, who died Sept. 27 after the stabbing attack at her Simi Valley home. Tinoco raised the children — four girls and a boy, ages 5 to 14 — as a single parent.

Ramon Joseph Rivas, 34, described by police as her live-in boyfriend, has been charged with murder in connection with Tinoco’s death. According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, he is also charged with two counts of child endangerment because two of their children were present at the stabbing.

As the case unfolded, Crockett shared her thoughts about a daughter she said made her proud.

“Jessica learned from my mistakes and was a better wife and mother than I was,” Crockett said. “She was a beautiful person inside and out. She would do anything for anyone.

“I spoke to my daughter 10 times a day,” Crockett added. “She was my everything. She was my best friend.”

Tinoco’s faith was important to her and she and her children watched services together on YouTube every Sunday, Crockett said.

She grew up in Oxnard and worked as an office assistant for a podiatrist in Simi Valley to support her family, Crockett said.

Crockett said her daughter had not graduated from high school at the time of her death but was in the process of earning her high school diploma.

More than 100 people honored her at a candlelight vigil at the Port Hueneme Pier a few days later.

Tinoco’s children now live with a family member in Oxnard, Crockett said.

“All she wanted was for her children to do the right thing in life,” Crockett said, noting that her daughter was a strict but loving mother.

As of Thursday, a GoFundMe campaign had raised $19,532 to help Tinoco’s children. The goal is $100,000. To donate, go to www.gofundme.com/f/join-us-in-supporting-jessicas-family.

Crockett, a Fresno resident, said she plans to attend all of Rivas’ court appearances. He was not related to any of the children, she said.

He appeared in Ventura County Superior Court for arraignment on Oct. 1, but pleaded no contest and the matter continued, according to court records. He is due back in court on October 30.

Jail records show Rivas is being held without bail in the Ventura County Jail.
