AG criticizes school bomb scare as “lawlessness”

AAttorney General Dale Marshall condemned the fake bomb threats that forced the evacuation of several schools this week, calling them “lawlessness.”

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Marshall emphasized the seriousness of the incidents, which crippled several institutions and are now the subject of a police investigation.

The threats were reportedly emailed to Charles F. Broome, Shirley Chisholm and St. Giles elementary schools on Wednesday and Thursday, with similar threats also reportedly directed at private schools. In response, Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Bradshaw issued a statement on Thursday evening denouncing the “malicious activity” and calling on those responsible to stop disrupting the country’s schools. She also confirmed that police are investigating five threatening calls.

At a ceremony at the Supreme Court Complex to admit 53 new attorneys to the bar, Marshall echoed Bradshaw’s concerns.

“Threats of any kind are a serious disruptive factor. Our experience has always been that these are pranks played by people, but in any case they have to be taken seriously,” he told reporters.

“The police need to go in and close the place down. It disrupts the school or the business building – whatever it is. Fortunately, none of the incidents were a real bomb threat, so we are now faced with another form of lawlessness in our society that we must address.” (JB)
