Lecture on international criminal law with a focus on the invasion of Ukraine

The French Embassy in Malta, the International Law Department of the University of Malta, the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ) and the Foundation for the Ukrainian Community of Malta invite international lawyer Clara Gérard-Rodriguez to Malta for an insightful and informative public lecture on October 16th at 6:30 p.m.

Gérard-Rodriguez will present the basic principles of international criminal law and explain how it works in practice, with particular reference to Ukraine. In particular, she will present her experiences from several months of cooperation with the Ukrainian Prosecutor General and support his team in launching investigations, establishing facts and determining responsibility for war crimes committed by Russia on Ukrainian territory.

Gérard-Rodriguez worked as a legal officer at the International Criminal Court. After graduating at the top of her class as a lawyer in Paris, she worked as a lawyer in a number of terrorism and financial crime cases and spent several months in Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Her expertise and clear analysis are in demand by the French media, especially since international criminal justice is back in the headlines.

The public lecture will be held in the Aula Prima (second floor) of the University of Malta campus in Valletta. It will be in English, but a written translation into Ukrainian will be available for Ukrainian speakers.

Following the lecture there will be a question and answer session. Admission is free, but registration is required

The initiative is part of the second edition of Legal Day, which will take place across the French diplomatic network on all continents in October, with the aim of promoting the law and its values. It is also part of a series of events to mark the 10th anniversary of the founding of the IIJ in Malta.
