Nicolson, 29, has already made a name for herself among Australia’s illustrious boxing field with gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and bronze at the 2016 World Championships. She also paved the way for women’s boxing in Australia with her appearance at the 2020 Olympics, where she narrowly missed out on a medal. Notably, she was born on August 27, 1995 at Logan Hospital in Meadowbrook, Queensland, spent her early years on the Gold Coast and attended Our Lady’s College.

When she visited her school in 2018 after her success at the Commonwealth Games, she went down memory lane. The 11-0 record holder said: “It’s a beautiful school. It was a positive change that I really enjoyed. I made lifelong friends that I still see today. I tell everyone I meet that I am a former student from here. I am a very proud former student of Our Lady.” Interestingly, Nicolson was born to British parents and therefore has dual citizenship.

Everything we know about Skye Nicolson’s parents

Nicolson’s father is Scottish-born Allan, who is proud of his roots, which originate in Glasgow. Her mother Pat is an Englishwoman from London. In a conversation with Women’s Fight News in 2022, the featherweight boxer shed light on her dual citizenship and also revealed information about her parents. She admitted “Both my parents are British. So my mother is from England and my father is from Scotland. So it’s actually quite easy for me to become a dual citizen, which I am now.”

Nicolson continued, adding: “My father is a very proud Scottish man. My mother is from London. Therefore, they are very proud of their British heritage. But they love Australia and they love me being in Australia. So it was a little bit bittersweet for her.”

Her mother can always be seen in the audience cheering on her daughter. However, the reason for Nicolson’s parents moving to Australia is not publicly known. But the start to the new country and life was difficult for them because they lost their two sons in a fatal accident. Although Nicolson was not yet born, her death profoundly affected her and her career.

Who were Skye Nicolson’s brothers? How did they die?

When Nicolson learned boxing gloves at the age of 12, she began training at the Jamie Nicolson Memorial Gym in Yatala. It is a gym dedicated to his late older brother. Jamie was an exceptional talent and was considered one of the greatest amateur boxers in the country’s history. Jamie had won a bronze medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games and then represented Australia at the 1992 Olympics.

But in 1994, a year before Nicolson was born, 22-year-old Jamie and his younger brother Gavin, just 10, suffered a horrific car accident on the way to training. It was fate, as Nicolson pointed out, that she also acquired boxing gloves and although she never met Jamie, she felt his presence and contribution to her life. When Nicolson won a medal at the Commonwealth Games, she believed it was meant to be.

Nicolson declared after the victory, “I won this medal for both of us [me and Jamie]so excited. It’s huge, it’s huge, I’m just glad it’s a gold specimen… It actually felt a bit like it was always meant to be that way.” After that, she only got stronger and now boasts a WBC gold ribbon around her waist.
