Attempted murder charges have been filed against a woman accused of shooting a man and herself at a home near Wonder Lake Thursday morning.

Aneta M. Marsek, 45, of Wonder Lake, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault by discharge of a firearm, aggravated domestic violence and two counts of obstruction of justice.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Department and the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded to the 8900 block of Tryon Grove Road around 11:05 a.m. Thursday for a report of a shooting.

Two people were reportedly shot at the residence, which is in an unincorporated area near Wonder Lake and Richmond, according to emergency radio traffic.

A 911 caller reported that one person had been shot in the head and a second person had been shot in the chest.

Two rescue helicopters were called and landed in a nearby field. Mercyhealth MD-1, a mobile response medic, was also requested.

The helicopters transported the injured to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Rockford, both Level 1 trauma centers.

Officials closed Tryon Grove Road between Greenwood Road and Barnard Mill Road for several hours.

The sheriff’s office warned people to avoid the area until further notice, adding that there was a heavy police presence there.

Several schools, including Richmond Grade School and Nippersink Middle School, were placed on soft lockdown due to the incident.

The charges against Marsek were filed Friday evening, court records show.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said the shooting was domestic-related.

Marsek shot a 41-year-old man with the intent to kill him and also shot himself, the complaint says.

The complaint said Marsek falsely told officers that an unknown intruder shot her and the male victim.

The complaint states that Marsek concealed evidence, namely a gun, by hiding the gun under a mattress in the home where the shooting occurred.

Sheriff’s officials said Marsek suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the male victim is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

An arrest hearing is scheduled for next Friday for Marsek, who is believed to still be in the hospital.
