Our pick for the NLCS

How many more chapters can the New York Mets add to their fairytale 2024 season?

After extending their season with one highlight after another over the last two weeks, the Mets will face their biggest challenge to maintain their dream run when they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.

The best-of-seven series begins with Game 1 in Los Angeles on Sunday at 8:08 p.m. at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers won the season series and won four of the six meetings between the two teams, but had not played each other since late May. This is a very different Mets team that includes the spark of Jose Iglesias, the growing influence of Mark Vientos and the newly injured Kodai Senga.

These Dodgers did not have Clayton Kershaw or Tony Gonsolin to potentially return in any capacity in this series. But what they lack in starting pitching ability, they make up for with one of the most explosive offenses in baseball. The core of Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez helped produce the MLB’s best team OPS and 98 regular-season wins.

The Mets counter with the best record in baseball over the past four months, including Francisco Lindor’s MVP candidacy, along with an experienced starting rotation led by Sean Manaea, Luis Severino and Jose Quintana that has been the most stable in baseball since the calendar posted moves to September.

A series between the Mets and Dodgers should provide the fireworks that every baseball fan could want in the NL Championship Series. So how do we think it will turn out?

Our prediction

Dodgers in 7th

We were wrong to back the magical Mets in the last round, but the Dodgers feel like a different beast than the Phillies. It comes down to the Dodgers lineup having the firepower to wreak havoc against the best rotations. With their backs against the wall, they celebrated Dylan Cease and beat up Michael King.

The Mets’ bullpen showed some cracks in the Wild Card round against the Brewers, leading to some of the heavily indebted arms racking up the postseason mileage heading into a best-of-seven series.
