World leaders have also condemned attacks by Israeli forces on United Nations peacekeepers after a second incident in 48 hours in southern Lebanon.

On FridayThe Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its troops were responsible for an incident in which two Sri Lankan soldiers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were injured.

The IDF said its soldiers operating around the base in Naqoura sensed a threat and opened fire. The incident is being investigated “at the highest level”.

In the meantime, on ThursdayUNIFIL said its headquarters in Naqoura and nearby positions were “repeatedly” attacked by Israeli forces. Earlier this week, the Israeli military expanded its ground invasion in southern Lebanon further west, asking people in Naqoura – as well as dozens of other towns and villages – to evacuate.
