The Vegas teenager Jesus Ayala, accused of killing retired police chief Andreas Probst in a hit-and-run, has been found unfit to stand trial

The Las Vegas teenager accused of intentionally hitting a retired police chief as part of a violent, laugh-out-loud crime spree has been found incompetent to stand trial in the fatal hit-and-run.

Jesus Ayala, 19, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Nevada on Wednesday for recovery treatment, Assistant District Attorney David Westbrook told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The order, issued by Eighth Judicial District Judge Christy Craig, was “out of an abundance of caution” and suspends criminal charges against Ayala.

Craig had previously suggested the teen was competent, but Westbrook had asked state doctors to review a neuropsychologist’s report before making an official decision, according to the Review-Journal.

Ayala, along with his accomplice Jzamir Keys (17), was charged several times with the murder of Andreas Probst in 2023.

Attorneys may also provide new evidence of competency, including Ayala’s conduct, her appearance in court and her refusal to participate in competency evaluations, according to an engagement letter obtained by KTNV.

Ayala was taken to Lake’s Crossing Center, a maximum-security psychiatric facility in Sparks, Nevada, just outside Reno.

A new case was filed against Ayala on Thursday, charging him with robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery and grand theft auto, court records seen by The Post showed.

Westbrook questioned why Ayala was charged in the case given the competency issues.

“They know that competency has been questioned and they still chose to file this case,” he told the outlet.

Medical officials have been examining Ayala since August while doctors disagreed about whether he was deemed competent enough to stand trial after a psychologist’s evaluation.

Doctors believe Ayala has brain damage and Westbrook said several people have described his condition as “pretty severe brain damage.”

Ayala and Keys were charged with multiple crimes, including murder, assault, attempted murder, grand theft of a vehicle and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Ayala, who was just 17 at the time, and Keys, 16, allegedly recorded themselves hitting Probst, 64, who was riding his bicycle on a neighborhood street.

A frightening video shot from the passenger seat shows the stolen vehicle approaching Probst from behind and suddenly ramming him, throwing the beloved husband onto the hood and into the windshield.

The laughing teens then allegedly dumped the bloodied car about 10 minutes away, 8NewsNow reported – before stealing two more vehicles, which they then crashed near a shopping center.

Apparently the young people were on a wild crime spree that morning, during which they hit a 72-year-old cyclist shortly before dawn.

Ayala was caught by police hours later but bragged that he would be out in a month.

“You think that’s juvenile [expletive] will do some things [expletive]? I bet I’ll be out in 30 days,” Ayala told cops, according to KLAS.

Ayala is also charged with attempted murder over a separate “extremely violent” group attack in which one person was stabbed multiple times.

The stabbing victim suffered multiple cuts, including a large one to the head, before seeking treatment at University Medical Center (UMC) on June 27, 2023.

Ayala’s trial for Probst’s murder was scheduled for November.

Keys is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 22 and his trial is scheduled to begin on Nov. 12, according to court records.
