A man was shot dead in Birmingham’s second murder of the day

A man was fatally shot outside his home in Ensley on Friday evening.

The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. in the 1800 block of 31st Street in Ensley Highlands Township.

Sergeant. LaQuitta Wade said West District officers were dispatched to the neighborhood on a report of a person down. When they got there, they found the victim lifeless in front of a house.

He was pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Wade said the victim had just left his home to speak with another family member. At this point, the unknown suspect drove a vehicle to the front of the house.

“The victim and the suspect exchanged words,” Wade said. “The suspect shot the victim and left the scene.”

There were no arrests. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect and victim knew each other.

The fatal shooting was the second homicide in the city on Friday.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., another man was fatally shot in the 8300 block of Fourth Avenue North in East Lake. This murder also involved a verbal argument that escalated into gunfire.

Friday night’s murder was the 130th homicide in the city this year. Of these, nine were found to be justified and two others occurred in earlier years, but the victims died in 2024.

There were 164 murders across Jefferson County, including 130 in Birmingham.
