The family of Esoterica Spivey, who was killed during a police chase on Eastex Feeder Road, is asking authorities to apologize

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A family says officers should not have continued the chase that killed a woman Wednesday night.

Esoterica Spivey, 40, died from her injuries after her car was struck by a fleeing vehicle traveling the wrong way on Eastex Feeder Road.

“It could have stopped, especially because he was driving in the wrong direction. Just let it be,” Spivey’s mother, Deborah Davenport, told ABC13 on Friday.

According to Humble police, 25-year-old Sebastian Sanchez was driving a stolen car and would not stop. A 30-minute police chase ensued involving at least four law enforcement agencies, but when Sanchez drove the wrong way in the main lanes of the Eastex Freeway, two of them, Humble PD and HPD, withdrew because of the danger to the Public back security. Only the Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constable’s office remained, they said.

Spivey’s car was hit head-on on the slip road by the pursued vehicle. Her fiancé was in the passenger seat and survived.

“Blood is on everyone’s hands. There is blood on Mr. Sanchez’s hands because of the decisions he made and blood on the officers’ hands because of the decisions they made,” said Cory Spivey, Esoterica’s sister.

Precinct 4 and Constable Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden have not responded to ABC13’s requests for comment in two days.

Spivey was the mother of two daughters, ages 8 and 9.

“We love you, we miss you and we thank God for you,” Cory said.

Sanchez, whose bond was set at $450,000, was charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was released from jail on bail after allegedly leading police on a chase in another stolen car in July.

Meanwhile, Spivey’s family wants to hold the agency involved accountable.

“Ultimately, her decision cost a life, and it was my child’s life,” Davenport said. “And at the end of the day, I want them to come forward and apologize for their actions, and then we will take action.”
