CCSO reports homicide correction | News

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is reporting six homicides within county lines in 2023, not 27 as previously reported by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in its annual crime report.

The reporting error was brought to the attention of CCSO staff after SLED released its 2023 crime report in September. After an internal investigation into the issue, it was determined that there was a coding issue in our violent crime statistics. Multiple departments within the agency are working together to resolve the issue and CCSO has communicated with SLED to resolve the coding error.

“Our goal is always to be as transparent as possible with the public, but a big part of that is providing accurate information to the community,” said Sheriff Kristin Graziano. “We take full responsibility for this error and will learn from it in the future.” We would also like to thank SLED for its patience and understanding as we know this will impact the outcome of the entire report.”

Homicides investigated by CCSO in 2023 include two felonies in Hollywood and one each in Charleston, North Charleston, Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island.
