On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at approximately 3:07 a.m., Cameron County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 29000 block of Jefferson Avenue near San Benito for a suspected aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), upon arrival, officers made contact with a reported 52-year-old victim, 52, who told officers that a male suspect, later identified as Jonathan Hernandez, 29, arrived at his apartment and allegedly aimed an assault rifle at him.

According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), the victim told officers that in addition to Jonathan Hernandez, there were two other people, later identified as Juan Manuel Lerma Galindo, 34, and Luz Lerma, 36.

The reported victim noted that all individuals entered his property despite knowing that there were “No Trespassing” signs posted at the entrance and that they refused to leave the property when asked to do so. The victim feared losing his life or suffering serious bodily harm when Hernandez pointed the rifle and threatened to kill him.

According to the sheriff’s office report, assisting officers located the suspects minutes later in the 30000 block of Petras Rd., San Benito.

All three individuals were taken to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito and charged with the crimes mentioned. Officers later found the rifle and presented it as evidence.

In a separate, independent investigation outside the San Benito city limits, officers responded to the Los Indios Port of Entry on September 23, 2024 regarding a man with an active arrest warrant.

According to the CCSO, upon arrival at the Los Indios port of entry, officers made contact with Customs and Border Protection officers who arrested Hugo Blanco on an active warrant out of Harris County for the offense of criminal trespass (Warrant #2382454).
