According to police, the shop owner is accused of operating illegal gambling machines

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Memphis police have arrested and charged a man accused of operating illegal gambling machines.

According to MPD, officers executed a search warrant at Smile Mart on Waring Road.

Before the search, undercover officers played slot machines in the store, won money and went to the cash register to cash in their winnings.

The suspect and store owner, Habtamu Mogas, 50, worked as a cashier during the search warrant.

According to the affidavit, officers found six electronic gaming machines, all of which were connected and functioning.

Mogas also operated payout vouchers for gambling behind the cash register.

After further investigation, Mogas was taken into custody and is now charged with gambling advertising and possession of gambling devices.
