GRAND RAPIDS — A double attack Monday has led to charges against three people, including the wife of one of the victims.

Authorities said a family-related dispute led to Daniel Edwin Brusacoram, 31, of Talmoon, opening fire in the basement of a Calumet home, striking at least one of the victims.

According to the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, a man was taken to Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital with three gunshot wounds, while his sister was flown to a hospital in Duluth for treatment of her head injuries.

Also charged in the attack are Jessica Jean Schinzing, 46, of Grand Rapids, and Isabelle Lorraine Smith, 23, of Talmoon. Schinzing is the wife of the male victim.

According to the criminal complaints:

Around 2:30 a.m., officers were called to 1020 Gary St. in Calumet. Initial reports indicate that two victims were struck by gunfire.

The woman was bleeding profusely from cuts and a possible gunshot wound, while the man had two gunshot wounds to the chest and one to the thigh. Her identity has not been revealed.

Two teenage witnesses told investigators that Brusacoram, Schinzing and a third person, later identified as Smith, were in the house when a “very loud noise” was heard in the basement. The suspects were then chased up the stairs by the victim woman, who followed them to her car and tried to prevent them from escaping.

The male victim stated that he was at his sister’s because he was arguing with his wife Schinzing. He said his sister also called or texted her about family matters, which may have upset her.

The man reported being confronted by the trio in the basement while Schinzing yelled, “You’re not going to fuck with my family.” He said Brusacoram then brandished a Hellcat 9mm pistol that belonged to Schinzing and shot him .

The victim said he also saw Smith punch his sister in the face but was unsure if she was ever shot during the altercation. Schinzing is also accused of assaulting the woman, who suffered a broken nose and needed braces on her head.

Schinzing was arrested later that morning in Grand Rapids, with officers noting signs of impairment. She reportedly admitted to using methamphetamine within the last 72 hours.

Brusacoram and Smith were found that same morning on US Highway 169 and were arrested after fleeing on foot. A 9mm handgun was seized in Brusacoram.

Brusacoram has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for witness tampering, kidnapping, first-degree burglary, impaired driving, disorderly conduct and threats of violence. There is also a gun possession case pending in Hibbing.

Brusacoram is charged with attempted second-degree premeditated murder, first-degree assault and possession of a firearm by a felon. Schinzing and Smith are charged with third-degree assault and aiding and abetting first-degree assault. Schinzing also faces charges of negligence.

Judge Korey Wahwassuck set bail for Brusacoram at $250,000 with conditions or $500,000 without conditions and for Schinzing and Smith at $100,000 with conditions or $200,000 without conditions.

All three remained in the Itasca County Jail Friday and are scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 23.
