Man stabbed in argument at Cascades Gateway Park

Man stabbed in argument at Cascades Gateway Park

A 24-year-old man was stabbed to death Thursday evening after an argument near the church on the grounds of the Park micro-shelter on Southeast Turner Road.

Police were called to the property around 10 p.m., said Salem police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick.

She said witnesses reported hearing an argument between two men.

“The argument turned into a physical altercation in which one of the men stabbed the other. The suspect then fled the scene,” she said.

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

DJ Vincent, founding pastor and CEO of homeless services provider Church at the Park, said the stabbing took place at nearby Cascade Gateway Park. The agency’s employees found out about this because the victim came to their property seeking help.

“They broke through the gate and fence to escape what was happening,” he said.

Church at the Park had two employees on scene and a third nearby who responded, Vincent said. They administered first aid and called the police.

Two other employees went to the site after being informed of the stabbing.

The property, located at 2410 Turner Rd. SE, houses approximately 40 young adults ages 18 to 24 in micro-housing accommodations.

Hedrick said police conducted an “extensive search” of the area and were unable to locate the suspect.
