Tyler Perry’s World War II drama stars Kerry Washington as a trailblazing officer – critics slam drunk

It’s easy to dismiss Tyler Perry as the guy who makes those terrible Madea comedies, but if you look at his entire resume, you’ll see that he’s done a lot more. Especially lately when Perry has been directing serious dramas like The Blues of a Jazzman, Mea culpaAnd Black divorce. For his third film in 2024, Perry embarks on his biggest film yet The Six triple eightsa World War II drama, the first and only Army battalion to include women of color.

Based on Kevin M. Hymel’s 2019 article in WWII History magazine: The Six Triple Eight The film stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the first African-American woman to serve as an officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and commander of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.

The film was written and directed by Perry, with new music by Diane Warren and HER

Washington’s cast is joined by a huge ensemble including Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Jeanté Godlock, Jay Reeves, Jeffery Johnson, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Donna Biscoe and Gregg include Sulkin, Scott Daniel Johnson, Susan Sarandon, with Dean Norris and Sam Waterston and Oprah Winfrey.

SUMMARY: THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT is inspired by the first and only colored unit of the Women’s Army Corps to serve overseas during World War II. Despite racism and sexism – and grueling working conditions – they were determined to serve their country with honor and distinction. Faced with an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes have given hope and broken down barriers. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, the film stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the commanding officer of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. Produced by Tyler Perry, Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig and Carlota Espinosa, the film features an ensemble cast including Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay and many more.

Six triple eights hits select theaters on December 6th, followed by Netflix on December 20th.
