Greensboro man found not guilty in fatal shooting

NEWPORT, Vt. (WCAX) – A man accused in a fatal shooting in Greensboro has been found not guilty.

Daryl Johnson of Greensboro has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in the October 2021 shooting death of 27-year-old Robert Chaplin of East Hardwick.

According to police, the two men were involved in a fight at the Hardwick Quick Stop after Chaplin attempted to buy beer. The seller refused the sale on the grounds that Chaplin had already drunk too much. According to police, Johnson then intervened and forced Chaplin out of the rapid stop. Later that night, Chaplin showed up at Johnson’s house and Johnson shot Chaplin after he refused to leave the property.

Johnson claimed self-defense. After a hearing in November 2021, he was released pending trial.

On Thursday, Johnson was found not guilty in Orleans County Court and the case is closed. His attorney said Johnson and his family are grateful for the support the Greensboro and Hardwick communities gave him during this ordeal.
